President's Award/Koizumi Sports Encouragement Award

Keio University President's Award (President's Award)

This award is intended to commend and make widely known exemplary activities by students which not only contribute to raising the standing of the student responsible but are also recognized as achievements benefitting Keio University. These achievements may be in an array of domains, including academic, artistic, social, and cultural, but fall outside the scope of academic and sporting achievements and can be achieved either inside or outside the university. Activities undertaken as part of the regular curriculum or equivalent (e.g. activities leveraging the knowledge of specialist fields; to include academic papers, seminars, research meetings) will be considered as falling outside the scope of this award.


Application calls are typically posted around mid-October, with applications accepted till around mid-January of the following year. Detailed schedules, etc., will be included in the application guidelines posted on this page and on campus bulletin boards.



Koizumi Sports Encouragement Award

This award is intended to honor groups or individuals of excellent character and in good health, not affiliated with the Keio University Athletic Association and whose activities have contributed to the enhancement of the university's standing through sports.


Application calls are typically posted around mid-October, with applications accepted till around mid-November. Detailed schedules, etc., will be included in the application guidelines posted on this page and on campus bulletin boards.



Applications for the Keio University President's Award

The application call for the AY 2019 Keio University President's Award will be held as below:



Award scope

Activities by undergraduate and graduate students within their academic, artistic, social, and cultural pursuits for which it has come to light that the students to be honored have produced outstanding results that set an example for other Keio students, and which in principle took place during the period from January to December 2019.
Note that if activities are deemed as being undertaken as part of the regular curriculum such as seminars or research meetings (academic papers, contest prizes, presentations at academic conferences, etc.) or extensions thereof (activities to deepen themes of study for major), they will not be eligible to receive the prize.



Application Deadline

January 9, 2020 (Thursday), until the end of the Administrative Office's service hours
*Note the closure times of the Administrative Office for the New Year's holidays (Administrative Office Closure, December 28 to January 5)



Submission method

Referee (tenured Keio faculty member) or the candidate themselves should submit required documentation directly to the service desk at the Student Life Services Section of the Office of Student Services/School Office at respective campuses.
(Not to be mailed)



Application materials
Assemble and directly submit in full the below documents (A) - (C)

In principle, these should be original copies; documents will not be returned. Data submissions are not allowed.

A) Letter of recommendation
⇒ Prescribed format (available at application counter) To be drafted by tenured Keio faculty member

B) Reasons for recommendation
⇒ No prescribed format Detailed and objective explanation of the reasons achievement(s) deserve(s) to be awarded.
Permissible for person other than that of nominating party in (A) to draft depending on the activity.


C) Documents or material proof on circumstances of the activity and outcomes for commendation
⇒ Examples: certificates, commendations, newspaper articles, competition programs, etc.
*Applicants are permitted to include copies of certificates, etc., in their applications if they wish to retain originals.
Both the originals and photocopies of certificates, etc., should be presented when applying in this way
*Additional materials with more specific details may be requested at a later date.


Results notification
Referees and candidates are intended to be informed on paper of the results in mid-March 2020.

Application call for the Koizumi Sports Encouragement Award

The application call for the Koizumi Sports Encouragement Award for AY 2019 will proceed as detailed below.



1. Eligibility

Individuals or groups which meet all of the conditions from 1) to 3)


1) Submit documents and material proof of activities for any of the following achievements for the period from January to December 2019.


  • Victory in a national tournament or equivalent competition
  • Appearance at an international competition contributing to the enhancement of the standing of sports in Japan
  • Other, outstanding achievements through sports

2) If an individual, achievements must be those of a Keio undergraduate or graduate student. Must be full-time undergraduate or graduate degree students, with achievements occurring during current enrollment at Keio University.
If a group, comprises students satisfying the above conditions. 


3) Should not be affiliated with the Keio University Athletic Association at the time of the achievement.
*If not enrolled at Keio University during the time the prize will be awarded, this may be overlooked after internal review by awards board.



2. Application deadline

November 11, 2019 (Monday), until the end of the Administrative Office's service hours
*Ensure to consult in advance if competition, etc., will be held outside the application deadline period, and submit by the above deadline all documents that can be prepared in advance.



3. Where and how to apply

Referee (tenured Keio faculty member) or the candidate themselves should submit required documentation directly to the service desk at Student Life Services at the Office of Student Services/School Office of respective campuses.



4. Application documents

No prescribed format. Detailed and objective explanation of the reasons achievement(s) deserve(s) to be awarded.

C) Documents or material proof on circumstances of the activity and outcomes for commendation
Example: commendations, certificates, other certification, etc.


  • Copy of relevant publication such as newspaper articles, institutional papers, trade papers, etc.
  • Official pamphlet of tournament, etc.
  • Other objective and detailed materials

You may apply using photocopies in the case that you are unable to submit an original for documents such as a commendation, or if your wish to retain a keepsake copy for an item such as a competition brochure.


In such cases you must bring both the originals and photocopies when making the application.


Submission of additional materials may be requested at a later date.



5. Results notification

Referees and candidates are intended to be informed on paper of the results in mid-March 2020.



6. Notes

Ensure to consult in advance if the tournament, etc. is to be held outside the application deadline period.
