The Global Information and Governance Academic (GIGA) Program is Keio's first English-based undergraduate degree program. It was launched under the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies in 2011 and expanded to the Faculty of Policy Management in 2015. Core courses are conducted in English, allowing students to earn all required graduation credits in the language. Additionally, optional Japanese language courses help students better navigate the local environment and improve their chances of working in Japan after graduation.

Students of two Faculties can register for the GIGA program courses regardless of their faculty, year level, or admission method. They can also earn GIGA certificate by applying in advance and meeting the requirements listed below.

As the certificate details and requirements vary depending on the intake year/cycle of your enrollment, review the relevant sections carefully before applying.

The GIGA Distinction Certificate will be awarded to students who have completed the GIGA certificate course requirements and fulfilled the language requirements, as detailed in (2) and (3) below. Certificates are designated as GIGA-Governance and GIGA-Information, based on the series of advanced courses students complete.

(2) Certificate Requirements

Students can obtain the GIGA-Governance certificate, the GIGA-Information certificate, or both by fulfilling the requirements below:

*Students who have not passed the JLPT N2 may be deemed to have satisfied the language requirements by meeting any of the following conditions:

• Being permitted to register for a Japanese language course** equivalent to the JLPT N2 level or above
  **Referred to as "Japanese Skill" in the 2014 Rules and Regulations curriculum.
• Being approved by a full-time faculty member in charge of a Japanese language course to have Japanese language proficiency equivalent to the JLPT N2 level

Note: Students without a JLPT certification or Japanese course credits who possess sufficient Japanese proficiency can fulfill the requirement by passing the proficiency test held in November. (3) GIGA Certificate Courses

"GIGA certificate courses" refer to courses designated as "GG" and "GI" in the syllabus, counting toward the GIGA-Governance and GIGA-Information certificates, respectively. For details, check the syllabus via the Guide for Course Registration/Course Summary/Timetable.

Physical Education 2, 3, 4, and 5 will be recognized as fundamental subjects for the certificate only if you submit your final report in English and pass.

Important Notes

• For Physical Education 1, only classes conducted in English (marked with "GIGA/GG/GI" in the syllabus) count toward the certificate; those conducted in Japanese do not.
• Physical Education 2, 3, 4, and 5, count toward the certificate although they are not marked with "GIGA/GG/GI" in the syllabus.

(4) Application and Conferral

Students who wish to earn the certificate must submit their application in advance. Please apply as soon as you have completed the above language requirements.

You are not required to choose between GIGA-Governance and GIGA-Information at the time of application. You will be awarded either or both certificates upon fulfilling the respective requirements.

Students who have met the requirements to receive the certificate will be contacted via K-Support with further details after the semester's grade announcements.

Students can obtain the GIGA-Governance certificate, the GIGA-Information certificate, or both by fulfilling the requirements.

(1) Eligibility

• Keio University undergraduate students admitted between April 2015 and September 2025

*Different requirements apply to students admitted in or before March 2015. To apply, contact the Academic Affairs Office at least six months prior to graduation.

(2) Certificate Requirements

Students can obtain the GIGA-Governance certificate, the GIGA-Information certificate, or both by fulfilling the requirements below:

*Students who have not passed the JLPT N2 may be deemed to have satisfied the language requirements by meeting any of the following conditions:

• Completed a Japanese language course** equivalent to the JLPT N2 level or above
  **Referred to as "Japanese Skill" in the 2014 Rules and Regulations curriculum
