Application for Doctoral Degree and Submission of Doctoral Dissertation
In order to apply for the doctoral degree, please submit the application form together with the following documents.

Article 4
Doctoral degrees are conferred to those who have completed a Graduate School doctoral program.
Article 7 (2)
In accordance with the provisions of Article 4, those wishing to apply for a doctoral degree must submit the Degree Application Form, accompanied by their doctoral dissertation and other prescribed documents deemed necessary by the Graduate School, through their academic advisor to the appropriate Graduate School Committee.
Conditions of Application for Doctoral Degree and Submission of Doctoral Dissertation
- The applicant must have completed all course requirements of the doctoral program (Article 35, Keio University Graduate Rules and Regulations).
- The applicant must submit his/her dissertation within 6 years after admission to the doctoral program. If the applicant studied abroad within 3 years after admission, the applicant may add half of the study abroad period, for a maximum of 2 years, to the abovementioned 6-year period.
- The applicant must have published, or is scheduled to publish, an article in a journal which has gone through a peer review process before applying for the doctoral degree. An equivalent presentation of research results may be accepted as an alternative.
- The applicant must have passed the preliminary examination of the doctoral dissertation during the period of enrollment.
- The applicant must meet all of the conditions stated in 1 to 4 above. In addition, the applicant must obtain permission to publish the dissertation from two dissertation supervisors and submit the Permission to Submit Doctoral Dissertation document upon making the application for the doctoral degree.

One copy and the electronic data (PDF/A document), if the applicant consents to having his/her entire dissertation uploaded online.
Two copies and the electronic data (PDF/A document), if the applicant consents to having his/her dissertation partially uploaded online.

- To submit the data version of the dissertation, please save the file to a USB flash
drive and submit the drive with the copies of the dissertation.
- Supplementary thesis: 3 copies (optional)
- Degree Application Form: 1 copy (prescribed form)
- Thesis Index: 1 copy (prescribed form)
- Abstract of doctoral dissertation: 1 copy and electronic data (PDF/A; prescribed form)

- To submit the data for the abstract, please save the file to a USB flash drive and submit the drive with the hard copy.
- Permission to Submit Doctoral Dissertation: 1 copy (prescribed form)
- Curriculum Vitae: 1 copy (prescribed form)
- List of academic achievements: 1 copy (free format)

Rules and Regulations of Degree Conferral
Article 5
The doctoral degree is awarded to those who have been approved to submit their dissertation by the Graduate School Committee and passed the dissertation defense, and furthermore, have been confirmed to possess knowledge equivalent to or greater than that of an individual who has completed a doctoral program (hereinafter "confirmation of knowledge possession").
Article 8
In accordance with the provisions of Article 5, those applying for a doctoral degree must submit three copies of their dissertation and other prescribed documents together with the Degree Application Form to the President, specifying the type of degree for which they are applying.
Making Application and Submission of Doctoral Dissertation
- Examination will be based on dissertation evaluation and a defense interview.
- The above condition also applies to those who have withdrawn from the doctoral program of Graduate School of Economics, Keio University after completing course requirements, and are past six years since the enrollment.
- The dissertation must be submitted with a Statement of Reason for Recommendation by a member of the Graduate School of Economics Committee.

Applicants for dissertation Ph. D. are required to pay one of the following examination fees.
- Applicants who have withdrawn from doctoral programs at the graduate schools of Keio University after completing the course requirements: 50,000 yen
- Applicants with either a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree and are not applicable to condition (1) : 70,000 yen
- Applicants who are not applicable to condition neither (1) nor (2): 100,000 yen
- Applicants who are full-time regular faculty and staff member at Keio University: 20,000 yen
