Response to the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake (Notice to all Keio Students)

January 6, 2024

We would like to express our deepest sympathies to everyone who was affected by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake that struck Japan on January 1.

For All Keio Students

We are using the official "Safety Confirmation System" to ascertain the status of Keio students after the recent earthquake. An email for the safety confirmation system was sent to students' keio.jp email addresses on January 3. We ask that anyone who has yet to respond through the system do so when able.

For Keio Students Impacted by the Earthquake

Class Attendance

Students who were affected by the earthquake and will have difficulty attending classes should prioritize their personal safety. After you are in a position to do so, please contact the section overseeing academic affairs at the office of student services for your affiliated campus.

Economic Support

Keio University provides financial assistance to students affected by major natural disasters. Please contact the section overseeing scholarships and financial assistance at the office of student services for your affiliated campus.

Regarding Job Hunting Activities

If you experience difficulties in job hunting due to the recent disaster, or become subjected to actions such as cancellation of job offers or deferment of the start date of employment, please consult with the Careers Service Desk of your respective campus.
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has also set up a "Special Consultation Service for Students and Other Affected Persons (Japanese Only)" to provide emergency support.

Other Support Options

In addition to the above, Keio has made mental health services available through the Student Counseling Room. If you need to talk to someone, please reach out.

Volunteer Activities in the Earthquake Zone

Before volunteering to help with disaster relief in the affected region, we ask that you gather sufficient information about the area and confirm that you can obtain transportation and accommodations in that area. You should check prefectural and local government websites to see if they are recruiting or able to accept help from disaster volunteers. If you go to the affected area while the extent of the damage is still unclear or when there are active warnings for aftershocks, you may actually encumber local disaster relief efforts.

In these cases, if you get injured or fall ill, you will have to rely on yourself to deal with the situation. Please exercise reasonable caution.

Also, note that whenever you participate in organized activities or seminars, you must submit a "Notification of Off-Campus Student Activities" through the system for student club activities on the keio.jp website.
