[Important notice] Rigorous implementation of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (refrain from group meals)

April 7, 2021

To all Keio students:

Keio University Student Affairs Center

Currently, there is once again a rising trend in COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) cases in addition to an increasing number of reports in recent days regarding a variant of the virus thought to be highly infectious. Although the declaration of a state of emergency has been lifted, it remains a precarious situation where infections could once again rapidly spread if people are lax about following measures against infections. Keio students are required to act in a manner that will ensure infections do not spread any further and are strongly requested to strictly follow the below guidelines.

1. Refrain from group meals (including meals held outdoors)

Because group meals (multiple people gathering to eat, drink, and converse together) involve people removing their masks to talk in close proximity with one another, there is an extremely high risk of infection through droplets, and this has been a major cause of spreading infections. There would usually be lots of events at this time of the year involving group meals, such as welcome parties for new students; however, we once more strongly request that you refrain from eating in groups.
Note that there is a risk of infection from the dispersal of droplets even during group meals or parties held outdoors, such as barbeques. Please also refrain from eating in groups when outdoors.
If you have plans for a welcome party, etc., please take steps to enjoy interacting with others while lowering the risk of infections, such as by conducting the event online.

2. Rigorous enforcement of measures to prevent infections by COVID-19 and limit the spread of the disease

Please continue to thoroughly implement measures to prevent infections, including by maintaining physical distance, wearing a mask, thorough hand hygiene and gargling, and avoidance of the "3 Cs" (closed spaces/crowded places/close-contact settings), in addition to refraining from group meals as set out above, with a view to not "getting infected" or "infecting others."
If you exhibit cold-like symptoms such as a fever, respiratory difficulties, a headache, malaise, or irregularities of taste or smell, please stay at home and monitor your health, including taking your body temperature daily. Additionally, there are cases where people do not experience the above symptoms such as a fever, even if they become infected. Please thoroughly implement the above measures to ensure that you do not unwittingly spread the virus as an asymptomatic carrier of the disease.

3. Reporting if infected or when suspected of being infected

If you have become infected or are suspected of being infected, or if you exhibit any symptoms such as a fever, please report this immediately to the Keio University Health Center. By reporting and taking the appropriate measures quickly, the spread of infections can be prevented. Please have the courage to report to the Health Center and do not hide an infection or suspected infection or neglect to make a report.

Detailed information concerning COVID-19 is posted on the Keio University Student Website (https://www.students.keio.ac.jp/en/com/class/schedule/covid-19.html). You are requested to confirm this information and make every effort to prevent infections. In addition, always stay up to date with announcements and information issued by the national and local governments and behave accordingly.

When infected, there are cases of people suffering serious aftereffects even if they only experienced mild symptoms initially. Careless behavior has the potential to indirectly cause serious illnesses in others. Please conduct yourself responsibly and with sound judgment so as to protect the lives and livelihoods of yourself, your family, and your friends.
