[Important notice] Response to COVID-19 (coronavirus disease)

July 31, 2020

To all Keio students:

Keio University Student Affairs Center

As the spread of infections by COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) in Japan continues unabated, we continue to strongly urge all Keio students to do their utmost to prevent infections by COVID-19 and to limit the spread of the disease. Be acutely aware of how to avoid "getting infected" and "infecting others," and be highly mindful of your role as a Keio student and the responsibility this entails when you act.

1. Thorough prevention of infection by COVID-19 and limiting the disease's spread

COVID-19 remains rampant, and cases of suspected community-acquired infections are again being seen in large metropolitan areas. In order to avoid "getting infected" and "infecting others," please refrain from or postpone all unnecessary or non-urgent meetings and continue to enforce the following measures against infections: 1. secure physical distance (social distancing); 2. wear masks; 3. thorough hand hygiene and gargling; 4. avoid the three Cs (closed spaces/crowded places/close-contact). In addition, there are successive cases of people becoming infected through dining together. Please refrain from eating and drinking with multiple people other than your family members and persons that you live with.

・Keio University Health Center: About Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Guidelines for infection control at the university and workplace

When infected, symptoms that are often observed include signs of a cold such as a fever, a headache, a feeling of fatigue, and respiratory symptoms, while smell and taste disorders have also been reported. If you have any of these symptoms, please stay at home and monitor your health, including taking your temperature daily. Furthermore, there are also cases where the aforementioned symptoms do not manifest even if infected. In order to prevent spreading the virus unknowingly as an asymptomatic carrier of the disease, please thoroughly implement the above measures against infection. Please refer to the following handbook for details on infection cases and the requirements, etc., to suspect infections:

・Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare: COVID-19 Medical Treatment Handbook

If you do get infected, are suspected of being infected, or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 without appropriate protection against infection, please immediately report this to the Keio University Health Center from the page below:

In addition, always pay attention to the announcements and information issued by national and local governments and behave accordingly.

2. Extracurricular activities

In principle, please refrain from or postpone extracurricular activities other than those held online. Additionally, dinner parties, social gatherings, and activities that involve overnight stays including camps and excursions are prohibited.
If extracurricular activities other than those held online will take place for officially authorized student clubs premised on the implementation of basic measures against infection and the ability to avoid the 3 Cs, please carefully read the "Guidebook for Applications to Resume Extracurricular Activities" and carry out the procedures. Furthermore, because the university does not recommend the resumption of any extracurricular activities other than those of officially authorized student clubs, applications to resume such activities will not be accepted.

3. Behavior in public spaces

To prevent the spread of infections and nuisance behavior, please avoid gatherings on and in the vicinity of university campuses as well as in public spaces. In addition, it is strongly requested that when going to or returning home from extracurricular activities, etc., that you do not take any unnecessary detours, you do not use public transportation in large groups, you do not drink alcohol or loiter in public spaces such as station buildings, on the street, or in parks, you do not leave your belongings around without due consideration for your surroundings, and that you do not cause any commotion such as through raising your voice. Keio students should always be mindful that they are to serve as a "source of honorable character" and a "paragon of intellect and morality" in the community.

4. Travel overseas

Travel to countries and regions for which the Infectious Disease Risk set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is level 3 (desist from all travel) and level 2 (desist from all unnecessary or non-urgent travel) is prohibited. Please refer to the Overseas Travel Safety Information Homepage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the link below and try to gather the most up-to-date information regarding your intended destination of travel:
