Exam and assignment-related academic misconduct

Academic misconduct is strictly prohibited in all academic activities, including, but not limited to: semester-end examinations, in-class examinations, reports, assignments, and quizzes. Students are expected to understand the following points, and to undertake examinations and other academic activities with both sincerity and integrity.

Penalties for academic misconduct

Pursuant to Undergraduate Rules and Regulations, Article 188, and Graduate Rules and Regulations, Article 161, academic misconduct will be punished with the following severe penalties. These penalties may significantly impact advancement to the next year, graduation, or completion of graduate programs.

  • Failure of the applicable course
  • Grade deductions for all courses taken during the applicable academic year or semester
  • Reprimands, including suspension or compulsory withdrawal, depending on the circumstances of the incident.

Concrete examples of academic misconduct

Misconduct in examinations

    • Cheating and/or impersonation (arranging for someone else to take an examination for you)
    • Taking unauthorized material into an examination
    • Use, possession, and/or wearing of electronic and/or communication devices including, but not limited to smartphones and smart watches.
*The proctor will temporarily confiscate any mobile phone, smartphone, or other device that makes noise during an examination. Please note that this will be deemed academic misconduct.
    • Taking home any answer sheets
    • Intentionally failing to obey the proctor's instructions
    • Other similar behavior

Students must take care to avoid any behavior that may be misconstrued as academic misconduct.

Misconduct in reports and assignments

  • Impersonation (submitting work prepared by someone else)
  • Appropriation and/or plagiarism (copy and paste without citations, including self-plagiarism)
  • Falsification and/or fabrication of data
  • Working together with someone else to produce assignment material
  • Enabling plagiarism by providing a report to someone else
  • Use of generative AI that exceeds instructions given by the instructor
  • Other similar behavior

*Using someone else's work or ideas without permission will be deemed academic misconduct, irrespective of intent.
*Unless expressly permitted by the instructor (e.g., group work or collaborative research), working with someone else to produce a report for assessment will be deemed academic misconduct.

Important points for reports and papers

Reports and papers are a critical measure of academic achievement. Take particular care in observing the following points:

  • Clearly separate your opinion from quoted material
  • Always provide citations when referencing and/or quoting the work and/or ideas of others
  • Quotations should reproduce the exact words used in the original work (including any errors)
  • Consult each faculty's Course Registration Guide for information on the appropriate citation method
  • Include the URL, page title, and access date when citing online sources
  • In the event that an instructor encourages or permits the use of generative AI, use it appropriately as specified by that instructor. However, the use of generative AI to produce reports or other assignments must be clearly disclosed within the submitted document.

Lastly...

Never forget that helping someone else to commit academic misconduct is itself also an act of misconduct. When writing reports and other assignments, pay close attention to the appropriate citation style, etc.
