Regarding the Renaming and Clarification of the Role of Guarantors

Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation of Keio University's educational and research activities. Under the academic rules and regulations of Keio University (including its graduate schools), guarantors have played an important role in supporting students as the latter pursue their educational and research activities and proceed to become socially independent. The role that guarantors have taken on will remain unchanged. However, in light of changes in circumstances such as the lowering of the age of adulthood following amendments to the Civil Code, Keio University will be making a change in terminology as outlined below.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation for your understanding and support to date, and we kindly ask for your continued cooperation regarding this change. Thank you very much.

Details

1. New Terminology and Timing of the Change

The term will be changed as follows:

Current (through AY 2026): Guarantor (保証人)

New (from AY 2027): Parent or guardian (保護者等)

2. Clarification of Roles Following the Change

As mentioned above, the change in terminology is not expected to entail any changes to the specific role. The responsibilities currently fulfilled by guarantors are as follows, and no changes to those responsibilities are planned.

-Students who have been admitted to Keio University are required to designate a guarantor (hereafter referred to as "parent or guardian").

-When a student submits a request to the University for a leave of absence, withdrawal from the University, or other such procedures, the parent or guardian is among those whose consent is required.

-The parent or guardian serves as an emergency contact for the student.

Please note that this change will not require any action on the part of students or current guarantors (henceforth "parents and guardians").

3. Inquiries Regarding This Notice
