Examination Guidelines and Rules
- Place your student (or temporary) ID card on the top-right corner or aisle-side edge of your desk. Students without a student (or temporary) ID card may not take exams. If you have lost your ID card, you must obtain a new one prior to the semester-end examination period. Students who have forgotten their student ID card on exam day should visit the Office of Student Services to obtain a temporary ID card.
- Do not place unpermitted materials on top of or in your desk. Bags and other personal belongings should be placed under your desk, not in the aisle. Take care to bring the necessary writing implements with you to the exam. No writing implements will be available to borrow in the exam room.
- Electronic devices capable of data transmission or data storage that could be used to illicitly obtain exam-related information are prohibited even when there are no other restrictions on bringing materials into the exam room. If you are found carrying personal computers, electronic dictionaries, mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches or other electronic devices on your person (e.g., in your pocket or on your wrist), you will be charged with academic misconduct, regardless of intent. Electronic devices (and any alarms they may emit) must be turned off and stowed in your bag. Use of these devices to track time is not permitted.
- Windows may be opened for ventilation during exams.
- Wait quietly at your desk until the exam begins. Do not touch examination papers before being instructed to begin.
- You must provide the following information on the answer sheet, written out accurately and in full, without any abbreviations: your instructor's name, the subject name, your own name, and your student ID number. Answer sheets omitting any of these pieces of information will not be graded.
- You may not bring answer sheets into the exam room or take them out. Students caught doing either will be charged with academic misconduct. You must submit an answer sheet, even if it is blank.
- An attendance registration card will be distributed once the exam begins. Write your name and student ID number, then circle the applicable item in the "student ID" field (i.e., student ID or temporary ID). Next, pass the attendance registration card to the student behind you.
- The proctor will patrol the exam room to inspect student IDs. Raise your face for inspection when they pass by your desk. If you are wearing a mask, lower it temporarily so that the proctor can see your face.
- If you arrive up to 20 minutes late you can take the exam, but you will not be given any additional time. However, students whose ability to get to their exam on time was affected by railway delays outside of their control may decide whether to take the exam as scheduled upon arrival or apply for a makeup. We may postpone exam start times to accommodate railway delays. Unless it is absolutely clear that you will not make it within a reasonable timeframe, you should first head to the exam room to receive instructions from the proctor.
- Students who have seen the exam questions will not be permitted to take a makeup exam.
- Change for AY 2026: You may not leave the exam room during the examination. If after your exam begins you feel ill or have an unavoidable need to visit the restroom, raise your hand to request the proctor's permission. Students who leave the exam room during the exam will not be permitted to take a makeup exam, even for reasons including illness.
*Details about makeup exams will be provided by your affiliated faculty. You must familiarize yourself with this information.
- Stop writing as soon as the proctor announces that the exam has finished. You may not leave your seat while the proctor is collecting students' answer sheets. Moreover, use of writing implements, personal computers, electronic dictionaries, mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches or other electronic devices is prohibited. You must remain silent until you are told that you may leave the exam room. Students who fail to comply will be charged with academic misconduct.
- Once the exam has finished, the proctor will check the number of answer sheets collected against the attendance registration card. You may not leave the exam room until instructed to do so.
